Kanban Boards
Basalt provides dedicated visual Kanban boards powered by crates/basalt-kanban. Boards are stored as standard .kanban.md Markdown files, ensuring 100% interoperability with the Obsidian Kanban plugin.
File Format & Storage
A Kanban board is a plain Markdown file:
- Columns are defined by Markdown headings (e.g.
## To Do,## In Progress,## Done). - Cards are standard Markdown checklist items (
- [ ] Card text) or list items underneath each heading. - Frontmatter stores board-specific configurations (such as lane widths and archive lists):
---
kanban-plugin: basic
---
## Backlog
- [ ] Research Tantivy query syntax
- [ ] Design theme picker modal
## In Progress
- [ ] Implement Kanban drag-and-drop 🔺 📅 2026-10-10
## Done
- [x] Set up Docusaurus docs website ✅ 2026-10-03
Working with Boards
Creating a Board
- Run
Kanban: Create new boardfrom the command palette, or name any new note with a.kanban.mdextension. - Basalt automatically mounts the board view leaf instead of the plain text editor.
Toggling Views
Switch seamlessly between the visual board and the raw Markdown source using the view toggle in the tab header or running View: Switch between Kanban and Markdown.
Drag-and-Drop Organization
- Drag cards vertically to reorder priority within a lane.
- Drag cards horizontally to progress tasks between workflow stages.
- Changes are written back to the
.kanban.mdfile on disk immediately.
Rich Card Capabilities
Because cards are standard Markdown:
- Task Signifiers: Cards support priority emojis (
🔺,⏫), due dates (📅 2026-10-15), and tags (#feature). - Wiki-links: Embed links to notes (
[[Architecture]]), which remain clickable inside cards. - Task Toggles: Checkboxes on cards can be checked directly to mark tasks completed.
