Task Board

The Task Board provides a Kanban-style visual interface for tasks across your vault. It lets you organize, triage, and progress tasks across columns using intuitive drag-and-drop interactions while keeping your Markdown notes as the true source of record.

Opening the Task Board

You can open the Task Board via:

  • The command palette (Ctrl+P / Cmd+P): search for Tasks: Open board view.
  • The left-hand ribbon icon or side dock view.

Columns & Status Mapping

By default, the board displays four workflow columns corresponding to Basalt's task statuses:

ColumnCheckbox StateDescription
To Do- [ ]Backlog and tasks waiting to be started
In Progress- [/]Tasks currently being worked on
On Hold- [?]Paused or blocked tasks
Done- [x]Completed tasks

You can customize which columns appear and their sequence in Task Settings.

Drag-and-Drop Synchronization

When you drag a task card from one column to another:

  1. Immediate File Update: Basalt locates the exact line and character span in the source Markdown file.
  2. Bracket Rewrite: The checkbox symbol is updated (for example, [ ] becomes [/]).
  3. Automated Date Management:
    • Moving to Done automatically adds the completion signifier ✅ YYYY-MM-DD (if configured in settings).
    • Moving out of Done back to To Do or In Progress automatically strips the completion date.
    • Moving to Cancelled (if configured as a column) appends ❌ YYYY-MM-DD.
  4. Preserved Signifiers: All other text, priority badges, tags, and custom notes remain intact.

Task Card Information

Each card on the board shows:

  • Checkbox: Clickable toggle to quickly complete a task.
  • Description: Formatted task text with links and inline code rendered.
  • Priority Indicator: Visual colored pill indicating Highest (🔺), High (⏫), Medium (🔼), Low (🔽), or Lowest (⏬).
  • Due Date Badge: Color-coded proximity warning (red for overdue, orange for due today, subtle for upcoming).
  • Origin Note Link: Direct link to jump into the note and line where the task is written.
  • Tags: Clickable tags to filter tasks.

Filtering the Board

At the top of the board, a quick filter bar allows you to:

  • Filter cards by keyword or tag (#work, #bug).
  • Filter by priority tier.
  • Hide completed tasks or toggle display of past items.
