Task Modal

The Task Modal offers a focused interface for creating new tasks or editing existing ones with structured fields and date pickers. It eliminates the need to remember emoji codes or manual syntax rules.

Opening the Modal

  • Edit an Existing Task: Place your editor cursor anywhere on a task line, or click the edit icon on a rendered task card, and press Ctrl+P / Cmd+P to run Tasks: Create or edit task.
  • Create a New Task: Place your cursor where you want the new task inserted, and run Tasks: Create or edit task.

Available Fields

The modal presents dedicated controls for every task attribute:

1. Description & Status

  • Description: The main task title. Supports standard Markdown formatting (bold, italic, code).
  • Status Selector: Quick dropdown to set To Do ([ ]), In Progress ([/]), On Hold ([?]), Done ([x]), or Cancelled ([-]).

2. Priority

Select from the standard priority scale:

  • Highest (🔺)
  • High (⏫)
  • Medium (🔼)
  • Normal / None
  • Low (🔽)
  • Lowest (⏬)

3. Dates with Interactive Pickers

  • Due Date (📅): Deadline for the task.
  • Scheduled Date (⏳): The date when work should be performed.
  • Start Date (🛫): The earliest date the task becomes actionable.
  • Created Date (➕): Recorded timestamp of task creation.

Each date field includes quick-select buttons for Today, Tomorrow, and Next Week, or opens a full calendar picker.

4. Recurrence Builder

Configure repeating intervals with a human-readable builder:

  • Frequency: Every n days, weeks, months, or years.
  • Days of Week: Choose specific days (e.g. every Monday and Thursday).
  • Calculation Mode: Choose whether the next occurrence is calculated strictly from the scheduled due date or when done (based on the actual completion date).

5. Identification & Dependencies

  • Task ID (🆔): Assign a reference slug (e.g., audit-q3).
  • Depends On (⛔): Enter the ID of another task that must be completed before this task can start.

Saving & Markdown Serialization

  • Press Save (or Ctrl+Enter / Cmd+Enter) to apply changes.
  • Press Escape to dismiss without saving.

When saved, Basalt updates or inserts the line with clean, standardized signifiers:
