Templates
Templates allow you to insert pre-written snippets, structured frontmatter, or complete document layouts into notes. They form the foundation for consistent note organization, meeting logs, project briefs, and daily journals.
Configuring the Template Folder
By default, Basalt looks for templates inside the Templates/ directory at your vault root. You can adjust this in Settings → Templates → Template Folder.
Any standard Markdown note created inside this folder becomes available as an insertable template.
Dynamic Variables
Templates support dynamic substitution tokens that are automatically resolved when inserted into a document:
| Variable | Output Example | Description |
|---|---|---|
{{title}} | Sprint Retrospective | Title or filename of the active note |
{{date}} | 2026-10-03 | Current date in YYYY-MM-DD format |
{{date:format}} | Oct 03, 2026 | Date formatted using Moment-style tokens |
{{time}} | 14:35 | Current local time (HH:mm) |
Example Template: Meeting Note
Create a note at Templates/Meeting.md:
---
date: {{date}}
attendees: []
tags:
- meeting
---
# {{title}} — {{date:MMMM Do, YYYY}}
## Agenda
- [ ]
## Notes
## Action Items
- [ ] ➕ {{date}}
